COOLING SYSTEM:CLEANING THE FAN

Hi.
Some people asked me how to remove and clean the fan. Some people have noticed that it makes a lot of noise and it needs cleaning and oiling.

Actually, I did not remove the fan, my vaio fan was also making a lot of noise. What I did was to carefully vacuum clean the fan and everything else around (except for the microprocessor and the side of the cooling system that makes contact with it)

you can see that you can reach the fan (up-right-side) and you can clean it and oil it (carefully not too much) without taking it away.I did it and it is much better now.

If you need to remove the fan and replace it, this will probably require fruther work, since it looks like the whole case needs to be removed. I haven't done this but I think it can be done.
If any body has done it please send some tips and photos.

good luck

ATTENTION!!!! be very careful not to touch (and not remove) the white paste which is meant to create optima thermal coupling between the CPU and the cooler. So DO NOT REMOVE THE WHITE PASTE. ALSO, do not touch the CPU unless you are planning to change it by another one compatible, it is very easy to dammage it only with your fingers, and remove the white paste with your fingers...do not do it.

How did you oil the fan without removing it? It seems hard to reach from the bottom.

It seems hard but you can reach it from the bottom. If this is not enough for you, you can also try from the top by removing the keyboard. http://openvaioseriez.blogspot.com/search/label/KEYBOARD

San - Thanks, very helpful. One question: what type of oil do you use on the fan? I have visions of using the wrong type and having it leak all over my laptop...

Thanks again. - Steve

If your VAIO still gets very hot after cleaning fan and cooling system of dust, in extremes cases, you can replace the white paste buying a new one, Artic Silver Paste will do the job. Just clean the old paste and put one or two drops of the new one, not too much!!!!

Guys, I have just done it. The fan was crackling. You cannot oil it properly without taking the whole thing apart. Yes, you need to disamble the mother board, take out the fan, to oil it properly. I spent 4-5 hours on Christmas Eve on this but it is rewarding. Now it is silent!
